Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral to access services at Humber Shores Psychology?

No. We are a private psychological services provider. As such, clients can self-refer by calling or emailing us.

Will a registered psychologist be working with my child?

Yes. Drs. Sorge and Royer-Gagnier are both clinical psychologists registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a psychotherapist?

  • A psychologist has obtained a Ph.D., during which he or she received extensive training in assessment, therapy, and clinical diagnosis. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.

  • A psychiatrist has obtained an M.D. and then specialised in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health problems. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication.

  • A psychotherapist may or may not hold a graduate degree. He or she has received training in psychotherapy.

Can psychologists prescribe medication?

No. Psychologists in Ontario are not authorised to prescribe medication.

Do you offer walk-in or crisis service?

No. Our services our offered by appointment only. If you are experiencing a crisis, you should go to your closest hospital Emergency Room. You can also call a crisis helpline such as EveryMind: 905-278-9036.

How long are therapy sessions?

Our sessions are 50 minutes long.

How often will therapy sessions take place?

The frequency of therapy sessions is determined with the client, based on their need and availability. Some clients meet weekly or every other week. Others meet every 3 weeks or even monthly.

Do you offer therapy for adults?

No. While we can support parenting efforts in parent sessions as part of our work with a child or youth, we are not registered to provide psychological services to adults.

Do you do Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments?

No. We do not offer assessments to rule out or confirm ASD. Still, our assessments can be helpful to identify and recommend support for depression, anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Intellectual Disability, Learning Disabilities, adjustment disorders, as well as difficulties that do not meet criteria for a clinical diagnosis.

Are psychological services covered by OHIP?

No. Unfortunately, at this time, clients have to pay out of pocket to access psychological services in the private sector, in Ontario.

Do you bill directly to insurance?

No. We will give you a receipt after each appointment, which you can then submit to your insurance provider.

Can expenses for psychological services be included on my personal tax return?

Yes. Psychological services expenses that are not reimbursed by your insurance provider can be included on your personal tax return application.

What is your hourly fee?

The hourly fee for assessments and therapy sessions is $225/hr. Our fees are informed by the Ontario Psychological Association's guidelines and they are in keeping with other psychologists in the province.
