Therapy
Therapy starts with a brief assessment to determine the extent and nature of your difficulties as well as what you would like to work on. A treatment plan specific to your needs is then developed. You are a part of the plan at every step of the way. As everyone is different, there is no set number of sessions. Usually, it takes a minimum of 6 to 8 sessions to see benefits or meet goals. Some clients require longer treatment depending on their presenting concerns. The frequency of sessions also varies based on the client's needs.
Therapy can be helpful to:
-
Increase self-understanding
-
Deepen your understanding of your child's needs
-
Learn coping skills
-
Deepen parenting skills
-
Learn to communicate more effectively as a family
-
Navigate a difficult period in one's life
-
Address a variety of challenges, including disruptive behaviours (e.g., non-compliance), anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and poor communication between family members.
Sessions are 50 minutes long.

Treatment Modalities
The therapeutic approaches we use are based on best practice research. Individual treatment can be helpful for children ages 8 - 18 but parent involvement is encouraged at any age. A family-based approach is recommended for children 7 and younger. Family therapy is also helpful for families who wish to work together on improving their communication, problem-solving, or overall functioning.
-
We use Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of older children and adolescents to help them manage their worries and their mood.
-
We integrate psychodynamic and mindfulness elements in our work with clients, when warranted.
-
Individual and dyadic play therapy are recommended for children younger than 7 years of age.
-
Structural Family Therapy is the main approach we use with families.
We do not offer:
-
Couple's counselling
-
Individual therapy with adults
-
Emergency/crisis response
